Review of Trademark and Industrial Design Legislation

Recommendations on the development of the Geographical Indications System

The document identifies the four geographical regions relevant to potential GIs and, as examples, some of the agricultural products with top potentialities for GI registration and recommended geographical names and compares the advantages and challenges between the two means of protection of agricultural products in Egypt, that is Trademarks and related individual marketing versus Certification and Geographical Indications with related shared marks and joint marketing. GI would contribute in those regions to improving the socio-economic situation of the population and especially of vulnerable groups and minorities while improving their income, supporting the registration of new unified brands based on joint/regional agro-food products, protecting the Egyptian agricultural heritage, conservation and promotion of local varieties of plants/breedings and promoting traditional know-how.

Protection of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Egypt

The document presents the definition of GI and its relevance to Egypt, examples of GIs and prospects for protection of GIs in Egypt and further recommendations that include: (i) the development of a strong legal protection and domestic GI system, drafting ad-hoc lays for GIs effective protection at national level, identification of most appropriate modes of protection for GIs in Egypt, to identify and select the most suitable verification process, to declare some of the targeted products as public goods and register them under GIs or collective trademarks, to develop a code of practices for selected agricultural GIs products, or to reinforce organisational and institutional structures/associations among producers.
