The European Union

Member States of the European Union have decided to link together their know-how, resources and destinies. Together, they have built a zone of stability, democracy and sustainable development whilst maintaining cultural diversity, tolerance and individual freedoms. The European Union is committed to sharing its achievements and its values with countries and peoples beyond its borders.

In the European Union’s unique institutional set-up:

  • The European Union’s broad priorities are set by the European Council, which brings together national and European Union-level leaders;
  • Directly elected Members of the European Parliament represent European citizens;
  • The interests of the European Union as a whole are promoted by the European Commission, whose members are appointed by national governments; and
  • Governments defend their own country’s national interests in the Council of the European Union.

The European Union with its Member States is a leading global donor of humanitarian aid. The EU helps over 120 million victims of conflict and disasters every year. With headquarters in Brussels and a global network of field offices, the Union provides assistance to the most vulnerable people solely on the basis of humanitarian needs, without discrimination of race, ethnic group, religion, gender, age, nationality or political affiliation.
